The marani
A marani is the place where the wine is made and kept.
01The vessel
What a qvevri is
A qvevri is a clay vessel shaped like an egg.
Buried, it barely changes temperature.
02Eight thousand years
Older than the barrel
This way of making wine is around eight thousand years old in Georgia.
In 2013 the Georgian qvevri method was inscribed by UNESCO.
03Maceration
On the skins
The grapes are crushed and destemmed.
Colour, tannin and grip all come out of the skins during those days.
04Ageing
Sealed, and left
When maceration is finished the qvevri is closed.
Light filtration is applied before bottling.
